Catriona Sturton outdoor matinee Sept. 18
Boy. How long has it been?

This is weird, isn’t it? It’s been over a year since we sent out an email. Bob & Cat saw a live show on Canada Day at the Neat, and that was the first real live music for more than 14 months.

We’re still here, though. Our household has been unscathed by COVID, and we hope yours have been too.
And we are dipping a toe back into in the house-concert water with one of Ottawa’s treasures: Catriona Sturton.

Catriona Sturton is entirely herself. She’s a truly gifted harmonica virtuoso, having spent lots of time in the South soaking up lore of this bluesy instrument from the greats. She’s also a quirky songwriter who can come up with a song title like “Calling from my pants” and BRING IT.

Her life has taken her from membership in legendary Halifax band plumtree to a stint in a J-Pop band and to working for and with Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly.
Her live show is like a jack-in-the-box. You never know what’s going to pop up, but it is going to be as entertaining to your ears as that pop-up clown is to a baby.

Check this sample out:

THE DETAILS:

Who: Catriona Sturton

Where: BobCat House Concerts back yard, 214 Northwestern Avenue

When: Saturday, September 18 (rain date Sunday) 1:30 mingling for a 2:00 start.

Suggested donation: $20, ideally in advance by Paypal or e-transfer.

What: (to bring) your own drinks and / or snacks.

Kerri Ough (photo: Ryan Nolan)

Kerri Ough is a writer and musician, most known for being 1/3 of the band Good Lovelies who have spent the last 13 years touring around the world and releasing eight albums in that time.

But this time, Kerri’s coming to BobCat as a solo artist as she does a series of house concerts across Ontario in support of her debut solo album, One Day Soon. She released that record in February and toured Atlantic Canada opening for Royal Wood before resuming her duties as a Lovely. About her album One Day Soon: "Anchored by an airy, intimate take on pop-tinged folk, the album is ripe with compelling foils – sometimes somber, sometimes sweet; sometimes wistful, others whimsical."

You will hear elements of Good Lovelies in her solo songs, of course. But you’ll also hear new sounds and musical ideas that are uniquely her own.

Kerri is touring this time with guitarist Christine Bougie. Christine is a sought after side-player who you may have seen alongside Bahamas on tour or on one of the late-night talk shows, or on her own. Her style is more on the atmospheric than the virtuosic, creating musical textures and colours on electric guitar or lap steel that complement the music, rather than show off technical wizardry.

As a solo artist and composer, Bougie has released four albums of instrumental music. In August 2019, she released Love Songs with the Queer Songbook Orchestra on 7” vinyl, which features two of her lap steel compositions, backed by a 10 piece chamber orchestra.

Kerri and Christine will make an evening of musical friendship that you will remember for a long time.
This house concert thing is kinda fun. We had such a good time hosting Jory Nash on March 23 we’re gonna do it again, and this time with a giant treat for anyone who is, or has, a mother: The Lynnes.

Lynne Hanson and Lynn Miles are The LYNNeS, two titanic songwriting and singing talents combining forces to bring multiple instruments, tight harmonies, and gritty and truthful lyrics to any stage they play on.

And in between songs, the two play off each other. Anyone who’s seen Lynn Miles here at BobCat knows just how funny she is; Lynne Hanson is a worthy partner with her own wit and sensibility.

The New York Times says “Lynn Miles makes being forlorn feel like a state of grace.” Penguin Eggs says Lynne Hanson “seems headed for that record territory inhabited by seasoned songwriters such as Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mary Gauthier and Lucinda Williams.”

Their first album as a team, Heartbreak Song for the Radio, led to two Canadian Folk Music Awards for English Songwriter of the Year and Ensemble of the Year.

After our Mother’s Day matinee show with The Lynnes, you’ll simply say: “Thank you for the music.”

Jory Nash March 23It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Work demands made it impossible for us to host for the last 18 months or so, but we are now able to open up the stage once again and bring you the best roots music we can find in Canada and beyond.

And to that end ... our first concert since the reboot is coming up in MARCH! Exciting.

We wanted to bring someone who we knew would do a stellar show, and who also has new music to share since we were last doing concerts. The first to come to mind: Jory Nash.

Jory has performed here before, and he’s a BobCat favorite (both in terms of the hosts and the audience.)
His finely crafted songs (most recently on his album Wilderness Years), his skill as a musician and singer, and his winning personality all make an evening listening to Jory an evening well spent indeed.
So join us, won’t you?
Hi BobCatters:

A note from us to say that sadly, we're going to be putting our shows on hiatus for the next while. New work commitments in the household are going to make doing shows on Fridays or Saturdays impossible, and so we are going to have to hit "pause" for now.
Hello, lovely music lovers, and welcome to 2017.

Our first concert of 2017 is going to be a wonderful one for a number of reasons. First, it marks the 10th birthday of BobCat House Concerts. We welcomed Suzie Vinnick and Tony D into our home in February 2007, and we were hooked on bringing music to eager ears. Since then, we've done dozens of shows, encouraged a few other people to begin doing house concerts of their own, and luxuriated in wonderful music and camaraderie.

Second, if you were at that show in February 2007, you may remember it was kind of a birthday gift for the Cat half of BobCat. It's her birthday month again, and if you play your cards right there might be cake this time!

But you're probably not coming for cake -- you're coming for music. And we have two announcements to make.

First, Anique Granger and Mélanie Brulée on February 25. These two performers share a depth of insight that comes through in their own songs and the songs they write together, but bring distinctly different voices to the mix. Saskatchewan-born Anique Granger is the more straightforward singer-songwriter, with a touch of the chansonnier tradition of francophone music, while Cornwall-born Mélanie Brulée is equal portions cabaret, indie-rock, and singer-songwriter, bringing a theatricality to her performance that is reinforced by solid musicianship and writing.

Join us for an evening of songs that will touch your heart or provide un vrai coup de coeur.

WHO: Mélanie Brulée and Anique Granger
WHEN: February 25, music at 8
WHERE: 214 Northwestern Avenue, Ottawa
SUGGESTIONS: Suggested donation $20 (cash or e-transfer in advance to bob.ledrew@gmail.com is appreciated); BYOB, soft drinks always available; a snacky treat is always wonderfully appreciated, as are donations to the Parkdale Food Centre

Special bonus sneak preview: March 23 we are thrilled to welcome a return engagement by one of our -- and Canada's -- favourite groups. We don't normally do weeknight shows, but when the Good Lovelies make an offer, we can't refuse. This will be an exclusive, private show with this Juno Award-winning trio (and February 2009 BobCatters). A full announcement will come soon. This WILL sell out, so book your seat now.Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08405145486006108557noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434370358805552715.post-3843370128458274182016-09-20T13:30:00.002-07:002016-09-20T19:06:31.086-07:00Fall begins with Norma MacDonald
Feels like WAY too long since we've had a crowd of people here to make an evening magic. So let's DO THIS.

It seems unbelievable that we haven't had a Cape Bretoner play a show at our house, since we're both from there. But we're remedying that BIG mistake with gusto October 15.

Norma MacDonald first crossed our path WAYYYYY back in the mists of time, when we were just starting out as adults and we'd see a band called Highland Heights in Halifax. The band broke up, but Norma has kept on with music and become a solo singer-songwriter.

Her voice is something unique. There's a bell-like quality to it, not brassy, but a timbre that brings clarity to whatever she sings. And her songs are wonderful examples of modern roots music. Her new album Burn the tapes was described by Exclaim! magazine as living in "the space between restlessness and peacefulness."

Join us to hear her music live, direct, and unfiltered.

WHAT: Norma MacDonald in concert
WHEN: Saturday, October 15, mingling at 7:00 and music at 8:00
WHERE: The Cape Breton Embassy, 214 Northwestern Avenue, Ottawa

As always, we accept donations to the Parkdale Food Centre. You can also bring along a snack to share and something alcoholic to drink, if you like. Soft drinks are always available.

Suggested donation: $20. You can drop off cash or cheques at the house, or send it to us via PayPal or Interac e-transfer to bob.ledrew@gmail.com.Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08405145486006108557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434370358805552715.post-82176234896449867082016-05-25T05:12:00.001-07:002016-05-25T05:12:40.634-07:00Donefors postponed Sadly, we don't have the numbers to justify doing the Donefors show this Saturday. We'll bring them another time. Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08405145486006108557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434370358805552715.post-21420634873183516532016-05-06T09:36:00.001-07:002016-05-06T09:42:15.551-07:00May 28: Hamilton's The Donefors come to play The next BobCat show is going to find a houseful of creative and quirky musicians making songs that engage heart and head with equal power.

The Donefors are celebrating 10 years as a band, but each of them has worked on solo and other group projects for longer than that. Probably best known of those projects is the great and lamented group Mr. Something Something.

In that time, they've made three CDs: "How to have sex with Canadians", "Award Winning Album", and "Lush Life Below the Poverty Line." Each of the records brings quirky intelligence and excellent musicianship to the studio, and that's what each band member brings to the stage as well.

Janine Stoll and Paul MacDougall played here together several years ago as part of our Babes for Breasts house concert; Janine also came to play a split-bill show with Emma-Lee. Her precise alto and rhythm guitar provide a bed for Paul's wide-ranging guitar excursions. Meanwhile, Liam Smith and Brian Lahaie provide bass and drums. Songs come from Janine, Paul, and Liam.

You can hear elements of Afrobeat, jazz, fusion, and almost everything in the eclectic mix that the four core Donefors bring to the band. And you might even hear something about Janine's project with Melissa McLelland and Lisa Winn, the Ladybird Animal Sanctuary. Ladybird is an animal rescue operation that's rescued hundreds of animals and placed them with forever families.

If you need a dose of witty and catchy songs in your ears -- you need to be here May 28. You'll be done for.

We rocked the house with Suzie Vinnick and Tony D that night, and since then it's been an endless stream of great music gracing our sunroom.

Following a sterling string of picks (Good Lovelies, Penny Lang, Jeremy Fisher, Peter Elkas, Amy Campbell...) she has chosen our friend Jory Nash as her 2016 guest.

If Izaak Walton was the "Compleat Angler", then Jory is the Compleat Songwriter. Over the last two decades, he's put out nine CDs that have charted his growth as a songwriter, arranger, musician and singer.

He's learned the craft of writing and performing diligently, and now he spends a fair amount of time teaching that craft too. AND... he's taken his love and respect for the music of Gordon Lightfoot and turned it into a legendary series of "The Way We Feel" concerts, and now into a CD project that's in the planning stages.

He's been with us before, but every appearance brings new songs and stories. Don't miss this opportunity.

We begin 2016 with an Ottawa girl who's making it work in the big city of Toronto.

Shawna Caspi's love of music goes deep, and was nurtured at the Ottawa Folklore Centre and Rasputin's. Since those beginnings, she's become a veteran performer, a tireless tourer, a constant contributor to the folk and roots music community, and much respected for her fingerstyle playing and her fine songwriting.

If you don't believe us, believe the folks who judged the 2015 "Songs From the Heart" competition, in which songs by Shawna were chosen in both the humorous and political categories. Here's her song Devil's Rolling Pin:
Trust us.
If you're a fan of the Americana genre, you need to come to this show. Nancy Dutra is one of those musicians who deserves to be FAR better known than she is.

A deep, warm alto voice that sings clearly and without embellishment or overdone drama; guitar that supports the voice and the lyrics; and songs that take the diverse music Dutra grew up with (fado and early country) and find a new way of dealing with familiar subjects: love, loss, and hope.

Respected magazine No Depression said this about her CD Time Will Tell: "then there came this voice. The one that emanated from the speakers had gentle jazz guitar notes spilling around like brandy in a big sniffer glass. It was a smooth blues voice . It has just enough jazz in it to intrigue the untrained ear -- to turn toward the speaker and listen, listen, listen."

No less a songwriter than Ron Sexsmith says: “A clear and unaffected voice and songs that are soulful, unpretentious and timeless.”

See what I mean? Even a hissing expresso machine can't break that spell (observant viewers will notice BobCat alumna Amy Campbell in that video -- this was her series of shows).

I can't think of a better way to spend a fine spring evening that getting some of that in my ears. Can you?
But there are those who forge a different path, like Graydon James and his bandmates, the Young Novelists.

This six-piece group (alex dodd, graydon james, shawn jurek, john law, mike paddags, and laura spink), take full advantage of the richness that extra people, voices, and instruments provide.

Their music is full of joy and intensity and tenderness, and these musicians bring a wonderful grasp of their instruments and how to play together from the softest pianissimo to thunderous crescendos.

So far, they've produced their debut EP, a small town eulogy, and a full-length recoding, in the year you were born in 2012. And later this spring, their latest project made us strangers will hit an unsuspecting world with the rich harmonies and great songwriting that is now expected, but with some new textures to the sound.

And you can preorder this new record RIGHT now. Just go to their PledgeMusic site to get in on the fun, with anything from the record to a dress-shopping excursion with vocalist / percussionist Laura Spink up for grabs.

We're just waiting for Santa to arrive tonight, but Cat already knows what her belated birthday

present is going to be: our first house concert of 2015 will feature the inventive and deceptively entertaining Jeremy Fisher!

Jeremy is a recent returnee to Ottawa, and 2014 saw him release The Lemon Squeeze, his seventh album. What makes Jeremy an ideal BobCat performer? He's got a distinctive voice (he says "sounds like Simon, looks like Garfunkel"), he's got considerable skill on guitar and piano, and his songs range over a broad range from pop-inspired tunes to broadwayesque story songs with a mix of sincerity and sly wit that is captivating.

He's toured the country by bicycle and by less fun means of transportation, he's toured with such notables as Xavier Rudd, Sarah Slean, Peter Katz, and Danny Michel, Cat loves him (Bob too), and if you haven't discovered him yet, you will be a fan by the end of the night.

You can stream the album here to get a sense of how smart and fun Jeremy's music is. See you on the 21st?

10 years ago, a small group of some of Canada's most important people in the world of folk music created these awards, and since then have put in countless hours (and probably more than a few of their own bucks) to keep the CFMAs vital and to put on great events across the country.

This is the place where Canada's folk community can celebrate the richness of our music creators and the achievements of those who've recorded over the previous year, handing out 19 awards.

As house concert presenters, we occupy a very privileged position. We get to welcome some of Canada's and the world's most skilled musicians into our homes and introduce them to our friends, neighbours, colleagues, and acquaintances in a uniquely intimate environment. And over our 37 concerts, we have become friends with a lot of the people who've come to perform at our house. So seeing some of our musical friends get nominated or win a CFMA is a reminder to us of just how lucky we are and a source of great happiness.

This year, six BobCat alums were nominated for a CFMA: Quique Escamilla, Gathering Sparks, Jadea Kelly, Amanda Rheaume, Shari Ulrich, and Jill Zmud. Three of those nominees were chosen by a jury as the best in their category this year:
We've been lucky to walk away from every concert feeling as if we've experienced and shared something very special. And if this sort of recognition helps spread the word about our folk scene to new audiences and pushes performers to do even more striking work, then I'm all for it.

DECEMBER 1 UPDATE: WE ARE FULL! If you've sent a message, I'll be back to you, but we are filled up and will be putting a waiting list together.

We don't normally do concerts in December, but rules are made to be broken, n'est-ce pas? And when you have an opportunity to present Lynn Miles with new songs, you DO NOT say no.

In the event you don't know Lynn Miles's work, suffice it to say that she is one of the greatest musicians and writers to ever come out of Ottawa. This December, when her NAC show "Songs for the Darkest Night" was announced, it sold out VERRY quickly.

So we are thrilled to present a 'preview' of that show at BobCat on December 19. There will be a band, there will be beauty, there will be laughter, and perhaps even a tear or two.
AND there will be a run on these seats.

Don't wait. This will be a special night with a wonderful performer, and it will sell out quickly.
Back in January 2010, we just about killed Jory Nash. Well, we stressed him out, by getting him to come and play at the house after driving through a fierce snowstorm. But now, with a new record on the way, we're getting him here (hopefully) before the snow flies!

Jory Nash brings a distinctive voice to his songs -- both as a singer and a writer. He's recorded seven albums to great acclaim and national recognition, and he's toured extensively in Canada and in the United States. He's currently working on album number eight, and he'll have a whole batch of songs from the album to preview for YOU on November 29. Join us, or you'll miss this:
We are more than excited for our next show. If you were to name a roots music supergroup, I'd nominate Gathering Sparks. This new trio of musical friends features three performers that have impressive individual resumes. Together, we (and you) are promised an evening of amazing instrument-switchin' folk music at its best.

Eve Goldberg is perhaps best known as the composer of "Watermelon Sorbet", the theme to CBC's "Richardson's Roundup." One friend describes Eve as a true folk singer. I agree.

Jane Lewis is another superb writer, keyboardist, and singer. And her partner Sam Turton brings virtuosic guitar skills and a voice and style steeped in gospel, blues and soul to the mix.

This promises to be a wonderful evening of inspiring music. Don't miss it.
UPDATE JAN 30: WE'RE GONNA CALL THIS FULL. If you haven't gotten in touch yet we can create a waiting list and put you on it, in case there are cancellations. Thank you so much for being eager listeners.

When we started doing house concerts, we decided that when a concert was happening during someone's birth month, we would let that person pick the artist. Of course, that only really works for the Cat half with her February birthday.

But she's made some amazing choices over the years -- Penny Lang, Good Lovelies, Amy Campbell, Missy Burgess, Peter Elkas...

And 2014, the 7th-anniversary show for BobCat House Concerts, she's done it again with a return engagement from the superb Jill Zmud.

Jill Zmud is a slightly late starter, musically speaking. She spent much of her youth pursuing other arts. But when she took up music, she quickly made up any lost ground. Her 2009 record "...as we quietly drive by" was a little piece of crystalline beauty, with songs that brought the sultriness and the gospel inflections over her to the forefront, and music that was artfully made by her, guitarist Chris Page, producer Dave Draves, and Christine Mathenge and Jerusha Lewis of the Voices of Praise Gospel Choir.

Since that album, she's been making music and working on non-musical projects as well. And as I write this post, she's recording the long-awaited second album.

On February 8, Jill and some friends will join us for a celebratory evening full of torch-folk-inspired smiles, sly giggles, and full-on laughter. It will be a joyous evening. And you should be there.

Happy 2014!

Lindsay Ferguson has been on our list for a while. And for some reason, it hasn't come together. Until now.

A woman with a wandering soul, she's most recently found herself living a "jet-set life" between Chelsea and Switzerland, where she found a musical community and much more recently.

Her musical interests are as well-traveled as she is. The commonality between songs that are pure folk, pop-infused, and as torchy as anything you'd hear on a Verve record: her lovely, rich and powerful voice.

We're excited to have her play songs from her two CDs Sound! and Monkeys Under Stars -- and maybe some new ones too -- for you.

WHEN: Saturday, January 18, with mingling at 7 and music at 8

Well, it's been a while, hasn't it! We've been doing a bunch of things and house concerts have been not on the agenda.

But we're back for one last show for 2013, and it's going to be amazing. Our last performer for the year is Quique Escamilla. (Key-kay EscaMEEla).

According to his bio, Quique "was born and raised in a family of six in the warm, tropical state of Chiapas in Mexico. He started singing at the age of four at family reunions. When he was six, he asked to sing with the in-house six-piece Mariachi band in a crowded restaurant. That night, Quique performed the classic ranchera song "El Rey" in front of an audience. At that moment, he discovered the thrill of performing and the powerful magic of live music."

While his music may have changed (along with his voice), he has by no means lost the thrill of performing and the powerful magic of music. In fact, he's wonderfully able to transmit that thrill and magic to his audiences, whether singing in Spanish or English.

He's been a performer with Danny Michel (another vote in his favour, says Bob), and has also shared stages with Michael Franti, Jim Cuddy, Jenn Grant, and Justin Rutledge to name a few.

Quique's music fuses traditional Mexican musical styles such as ranchera and huapango with modern sounds of rock, reggae, pop, ska, cumbia, bolero, jazz, and other Latin American rhythms. His considerable instrumental skills combine with his smooth voice to make him one of the best performers we've seen in a while. So come out and warm up a cold November night with some música caliente!
Our first BobCat of 2013 is one worth waiting for.

When you hear Jadea Kelly sing, you'll find it a little hard to imagine her singing and playing with metal band Protest the Hero. When she struck out on her own, she found a voice that some have called a "hushed Loretta Lynn", and a style of writing that is intimate and powerful.

Jadea tours internationally, across Canada and in the United States, opening for the likes of Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Catherine MacLellan. In 2012 she was featured on Stuart McLean's VINYL CAFE and recorded live by CBC at the Stewart Park Folk Festival in 2010. She also performed at Yonge & Dundas Square and the Sudbury Northern Lights Festival in 2012, as well as a couple of residencies at the Elmdale House (RIP [?] ). She is a captivating performer and you'll be glad to have seen her here, before the great wide world discovers her talents.
